The City of Raleigh seeks a Senior Utilities System Administrator to oversee water meter operations, manage staff, and ensure efficient utility services. Ideal candidates will have strong management skills, a solid educational background, and the ability to enhance customer relations. This role involves strategic planning, project management, and collaboration with various stakeholders.
This senior-level role is dedicated to providing operational, technical, and maintenance support for the City’s water, wastewater, collection, and distribution systems. Incumbents offer advanced journey-level professional utilities system administration and management work, serving as subject matter experts and providing consultation to other utilities staff and management. As assigned, incumbents may act as lead workers, assigning work and monitoring completion, or supervise paraprofessional and support staff, including conducting performance evaluations, coordinating training, and managing hiring, discipline, and termination procedures.
Our ideal candidate is a highly motivated individual with a strong foundation in utility operations and proven ability in HR core functions. Demonstrated experience in staff management, project coordination, mentoring, and problem-solving is essential. Excellent time management and interpersonal skills are required, including the ability to build strong relationships within and outside the organization.
This role is specifically assigned to the Raleigh Water Meters Division, overseeing meter reading, installation, testing, and repair programs for approximately 216,000 water meters and 40,000 backflow assemblies, as well as managing the Raleigh Water Hydrant Meter program.
Key responsibilities include:
Educational requirements include a Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, construction management, engineering, or a related field, with five years of relevant professional experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 60 days is required.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities needed include supervisory practices, work organization, coaching, program management, water and wastewater treatment, critical thinking, research methods, emerging technologies, project management, budgeting, communication, legal regulations, customer service, and familiarity with relevant equipment and technology.
Additional requirements include physical ability to perform job duties, with work primarily in an indoor office environment.
