Job summary

SCI Summit Consulting, LLC is seeking an experienced field-based Underwriter in Virginia to drive underwriting decisions and risk assessment for complex commercial policies. You will work with actuaries, agents, and clients to optimize coverage, pricing, and terms while ensuring compliance and high service standards.

The role requires strong leadership, excellent communication, and travel as needed to support our regional footprint across the South, Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Economics, Risk Management and Insurance, or a related field or equivalent experience.
  • 13+ years of underwriting experience.
  • Expert analytical, risk assessment and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead underwriting of new and renewal business per guidelines and risk appetite.
  • Develop and implement advanced risk assessment models for coverage, pricing, and terms.
  • Foster partnerships with actuaries, agents, brokers, and clients for information and guidance.
  • Procure and analyze motor vehicle reports, loss history reports, and external inspections to guide decisions.
  • Document underwriting decisions and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Evaluate complex renewals and modifications for enhancements and risk mitigation.
  • Communicate underwriting strategies to internal teams, agents, and brokers.
  • Monitor industry trends, regulatory changes, and market conditions.
  • Maintain relationships to generate and retain profitable business.
  • Monitor underwriting practices and assist with strategic adjustments.
  • May coach staff and participate in talent decisions for direct reports.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.
  • Field role in Virginia with remote opportunities.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
  • Leads the evaluation and underwriting of new and renewal business, ensuring alignment with Company underwriting guidelines and risk appetite.
  • Develops and implements advanced risk assessment models to make informed decisions on coverage, pricing, and terms.
  • Fosters strategic partnerships with actuaries, agents, brokers, and clients to obtain necessary information and provide guidance.
  • Procures and analyzes supplementary reports and screenings, such as motor vehicle reports, loss history reports, and external inspections, to support underwriting decisions.
  • Ensures proper documentation of underwriting decisions and compliance with state and federal insurance regulations.
  • Evaluates complex policy renewals and modifications, identifying opportunities for policy enhancements and risk mitigation.
  • Communicates underwriting strategies and decisions effectively to internal teams, agents, and brokers.
  • Monitors and shares insights on industry trends, regulatory changes, and market conditions.
  • Maintains effective business relationships with internal and external customers/coworkers, focusing on generating new business and retaining profitable business.
  • Monitors and evaluates underwriting practices, assisting with implementing strategic adjustments to improve overall effectiveness and outcomes.
  • May have responsibility for performance and coaching of staff and may have a participatory role in decisions regarding talent selection, development, and performance management for direct reports.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • The person hired for this position will work a field role in Virginia. #LI-Remote
Job Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Economics, Risk Management and Insurance, or a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Experience: Generally, a minimum of 13 years of experience in Underwriting or a related field. Completion of or continuing progress toward a professional designation preferred, such as Associate in Underwriting (AU), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC), Program in General Insurance (INS) or Associate of Risk Management (ARM), or a marketing designation.
  • Scope of Job/Qualifications: Performs work under minimal supervision. Works at the highest authority limits on the most complex assignments. Maintains expert knowledge of company policies and industry laws and regulations. Demonstrates expert analytical, risk assessment, and problem-solving skills. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Advanced negotiation and decision-making ability. Familiarity with marketing strategies and tools is beneficial. Recognized as the company expert in the field. May serve as the highest point of escalation for decisions regarding risk and coverage.
  • Position requires occasional travel.

Company: SCI Summit Consulting, LLC

Salary Range: $107,200.00 -$146,800.00
