Purpose and Job Summary

The Senior Underwriter is responsible for independently screening and underwriting multifamily and commercial mortgage financing programs offered by ORIX’s Real Estate Investment Strategies, including bridge loans for investment through proprietary and/or conduit executions. Transactions will vary widely, primarily focusing on conventional, transitional multifamily, and affordable housing, but may include other commercial real estate assets such as student housing, manufactured housing, and self-storage. Financing structures include pools of senior secured and subordinate debt for stabilized, value-add, transitional, and construction projects.

The Senior Underwriter will work closely with senior credit and originations staff to structure transactions, underwrite real estate collateral, analyze sponsors, negotiate loan documents, develop financial models, perform due diligence, and drive transactions to closing. The candidate will prepare credit memos and present recommendations to the Investment Committee, highlighting transaction strengths, weaknesses, and mitigants.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in real estate, including at-risk loan underwriting, valuation, workouts, development, or portfolio management, with a strong preference for multifamily assets and transitional bridge, affordable, and new construction projects. Must be able to evaluate credit risk and work independently under tight deadlines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review due diligence, underwriting, and valuation models.
  • Draft investment memos and asset summaries; present findings to the Investment Committee.
  • Identify and communicate investment risks; structure deals to mitigate risks.
  • Analyze property operations, sponsors, tenants, and markets.
  • Review third-party reports and legal documents.
  • Act as credit conduit for loan requests and aid in training originators.
  • Manage all transaction aspects from initial discussions to closing and transition to asset management.
  • Communicate issues proactively to meet deadlines and address gating issues.
  • Supervise and mentor junior staff.
  • Apply knowledge of valuation methodologies and enhance transactional analysis processes.
  • Travel as needed for property inspections and market evaluations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education, Skills, and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Real Estate, or related field; advanced degrees or certifications like MBA, CPA, CCIM are a plus.
  • 10+ years of multifamily underwriting experience.
  • Experience with Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and FHA programs is advantageous.
  • Thorough knowledge of underwriting standards across various asset classes.
  • Strong credit analysis skills and proficiency in financial analysis and Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple transactions and meet deadlines.
  • Discretion, confidentiality, and ability to work independently and in teams.

Annual base salary ranges from $180,000 to $230,000, depending on qualifications and experience. Benefits include bonuses, incentives, health insurance, retirement plans, and more.
