Job summary

Teledyne FLIR Defense in Orem, UT is seeking a Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the mechanical design of lightweight, high‑performance UAV and sensor platforms.

You will own complex assemblies from concept to production, using parametric CAD, FEA, and DFMA methods to ensure manufacturability and reliability. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and production to optimize interfaces, manage BOMs, and drive designs that meet stringent aerospace and defense requirements.

Qualifications

• Bachelore28099s Degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
• 6+ years of professional experience in mechanical design of weight and size sensitive assemblies and components.
• Strong CAD skills in both design and assembly management; robust parametric and top-down modeling.
• Experience with battery, motor, and UAV propulsion systems preferred.
• Solidworks 3D modeling, drawing, and simulation software is strongly preferred.
• Experience leading technical projects and teams preferred.

Responsibilities

• Owns system and subsystem designs and interfaces; integrates other subsystems into assemblies.
• Control large part count assemblies in CAD and PLM; ensure documentation in BOMs and drawings.
• Optimize for aerodynamic profiles and efficiencies.
• Use FEA and prototyping to design for durability, performance, and manufacturability.
• Develop tests to validate design across operational envelopes and environments.
• Drive DFx (DFM/ DFA) methods to deliver production-ready designs.
• Communicate effectively with team leaders and stakeholders; lead meetings as needed.
• Owns subsystem requirements, performance, and timeline with minimal direction.
• Coordinate with suppliers during development and production; possible travel.
• Coordinate with production staff on training, MTRs, and troubleshooting.
• Create and manage design data from concept to sustainment; support design change processes.
