Job summary

Stantec is seeking Senior Construction Inspectors (or Transportation Engineering Technicians) to join our Transportation team in Virginia/Maryland. The role emphasizes field inspections, quality control, and coordination with clients, contractors, and project teams on complex roadway, bridge, and structure projects.

The position requires a technical degree and several years of inspection experience, with strong knowledge of VDOT standards and the ability to mentor junior staff.

Qualifications

• Basic math, drafting, and science skills.
• Ability to solve complex problems using professional judgment, creativity, and innovation.
• Proficiency in Site Manager, Project Wise, and project material certifications.
• Takes initiative and coordinates with team members.
• Must have driving record and valid driver’s license.
• Knowledge of roadway, structure and bridge construction methods, materials, standards, and specifications.
• Certifications: VDOT Soils and Aggregate; VDOT Asphalt Field Levels I & II; VDOT Slurry Seal; VDOT Surface Treatment; Nuclear Density Safety; 10 Hour Safety (OSHA); ACI; VA DEQ Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector Level; VA DEQ Stormwater Management Inspector Level; VDOT Pavement Markings; VDOT Guardrail Installation (GRIT); VDOT Flagger Certification; VDOT Work Zone Traffic Control – Intermediate Level.

Responsibilities

• Perform daily inspection efforts on multiple projects ensuring compliance with plans, specs, and contract documents.
• Coordinate inspections with contractor’s representative, client personnel, and other stakeholders.
• Prepare sketches and data for Responsible Charge Engineer to use for project changes.
• Ensure quality control and contractor compliance for roadway, structure, and bridge projects of varying complexity.
• Review contractor plans of operation and advise on violations and adjustments.
• Generate inspection reports and document activities for monthly estimates and closeout.
• Review plans, RFIs, submittals, schedules, shop drawings, and pay applications (QA/QC).
• Verify lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using survey equipment.
• Mentor junior staff and train team on procedures and standards.
