Job summary

The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking a Traffic Operations Engineer to supervise the Traffic Operation Section, overseeing signing, pavement markings, ITS, and the Traffic Management Center districtwide.

The role requires licensure as an IL Professional Engineer or Structural Engineer, at least five years of civil engineering experience, and strong leadership and communication skills; hybrid work schedule with 1–5 days in the Collinsville, Illinois office.

Qualifications

• Current IL Professional Engineer or IL Structural Engineer license.
• Five years of civil engineering experience.
• Strong leadership and supervisory capabilities.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Trains, motivates, and evaluates subordinate personnel.
• Advises the district Operations Engineer on policies, programs, and procedures for section field operations.
• Prepares, monitors, and authorizes operating budgets and contracts for the section.
• Designs and ensures accuracy of preliminary interstate and other freeway signing and striping plans.
• Coordinates field work with other bureau sections and maintains district detours.
• Maintains ITS and Traffic Management Center responsibilities; oversees emergency patrol and ITS operations.
• Reviews the operation and effectiveness of temporary traffic control district-wide.
• Provides expertise in traffic control, signing, and pavement markings to municipalities.
