Job summary

The Metropolitan Government of Nashville & Davidson County seeks an Engineer 3 (Traffic Engineer) to serve as a senior technical resource within the NDOT Traffic Engineering division. The role collaborates with signal technicians, engineering staff, contractors, and partner agencies to support Nashville’s traffic signal network and will work in the field to monitor and analyze traffic concerns citywide.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Eight years of progressively responsible post‑degree engineering experience, including four years as a licensed Professional Engineer.
  • Tennessee Professional Engineering License must be obtained prior to completion of the probationary period.
  • Valid Driver License.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements, and evaluates traffic signal timing plans for various intersections and corridors.
  • Leads corridor‑wide signal retiming initiatives using field observations and travel data.
  • Supports real‑time operational adjustments during events and emergencies.
  • Coordinates with other departments and state agencies on relevant services.
  • Provides engineering guidance and technical support for signal technicians.
  • Diagnoses and resolves complex signal system issues with technical staff.
  • Participates in field verification and acceptance testing of new signal systems.
  • Assists in preparing cost estimates, scopes of work, and technical specs for signal improvements.
  • Evaluates intersection performance and recommends safety countermeasures.
  • Ensures timing accounts for pedestrians, bicycles, transit, and school zones.
