Job description

The Omega group in the Physics Department at BNL is looking for a mechanical technician to participate in the construction, installation, and commissioning of detectors for the ATLAS HL-LHC Upgrade and LBNF/DUNE. In this role, you will be collaborating with an international and multicultural scientific community and working closely with scientists, technicians, engineers, and students at BNL, domestic institutes, and international institutes such as at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Omega Group focuses on the ATLAS experiment at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. BNL is the host laboratory for the U.S. ATLAS Operations Program, the U.S. ATLAS HL-LHC Upgrade Project, an ATLAS Tier-1 computing facility, and is designated as part of the U.S. ATLAS Support Center. The group has leading roles in the ATLAS HL-LHC upgrade projects for the silicon-strip detector, liquid argon calorimeter readout, and trigger/data acquisition electronics and has strong R&D programs on trigger/data acquisition, high-performance computing, and silicon detectors. The group also contributes to the development and construction of the LBNF/DUNE detector in collaboration with the EDG Group in the Physics department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operation of complex laboratory equipment such as microscopes, wirebonders, computer-controlled linear stages, and metrology machines.
  • General mechanical and electrical support. Examples of such support are:
    • Machining mechanical components and cables.
    • Building mechanical structures for electronics systems.
    • Building cryogenic and mechanical systems.
    • Gluing assemblies of small components.
    • Record keeping of inventory and fabricated components.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:
    • a BS degree in a technical field and 4 years work experience or;
    • a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 8 years experience or;
    • a technical high school certification program (e.g. BOCES) and 9 years relevant work experience or;
    • 10 years relevant work experience.
  • Experience prototyping mechanical components in a machine shop.
  • Experience installing, debugging, and operating systems with both mechanical and electronic components.
  • Basic understanding of configuration control, quality assurance, and quality control.
  • Basic knowledge of Windows computers and applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to understand and follow BNL safety principles.
  • A demonstrated strong work ethic and the ability to take initiative on assigned tasks and projects.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a small team of technicians, scientists, and students.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:
    • a BS degree in a technical field and 6 years work experience or;
    • a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 10 years experience or;
    • a technical high school certification program (e.g. BOCES) and 11 years relevant work experience or;
    • 12 years relevant work experience.
  • Experience working on equipment for a nuclear or particle physics experiment.
  • Experience with test stand construction with a focus on cryogenic and mechanical systems.
  • Experience working on complex assemblies of scientific/technical equipment using specialized tools.
  • Assembly of delicate components in a clean room environment.
  • Hands-on problem-solving skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience working with a diverse team of technicians, engineers, and scientists.

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Arm/hand dexterity.
  • Lift (up to) 30 lbs.
  • Good vision and hearing, mental sharpness, alertness.

OTHER INFORMATION:

  • This is a fully onsite position located at BNL.
  • Some (< 5%) domestic and international travel should be expected.
  • Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable, and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $84000 - $105000 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education, and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
