Job summary

Liberty Mutual Group in Boston seeks a senior claims professional to lead complex Commercial Casualty and Environmental Liability matters from notice through resolution.

You will analyze policy language, determine coverage, set reserves, direct defense and negotiate settlements, partnering with underwriting and risk teams while mentoring junior staff. This role requires expert judgment, strong communication, and a track record in high-exposure claims.

Qualifications

• 10+ years handling complex commercial casualty or environmental liability claims, including litigated matters.
• Deep knowledge of coverage analysis and environmental liability (e.g., pollution liability, CERCLA, remediation, third-party BI/PD).
• Proven negotiation record on high-exposure claims.
• Experience directing defense and coverage counsel.
• Strong communication skills and the credibility to advise senior leaders; CPCU, AIC, ARM, or JD a plus; adjuster licensing as required.
• Experience with Superfund/CERCLA, remediation oversight, or environmental site claims.
• Background in law, environmental science, engineering, or a related field, or a professional designation (e.g., CPCU, AIC).
• Experience handling construction defect, toxic tort, or other complex specialty lines.
• Manage high-severity environmental and commercial casualty claims end to end, including coverage determination, liability analysis, reserving, negotiation, and payment.

Responsibilities

• Analyze policy language, exclusions, and environmental liability provisions to take well-supported positions on complex, often novel coverage issues.
• Build resolution strategies, including discovery plans, reserve recommendations, and settlement approach.
• Assemble and direct the right team for each matter, including defense and coverage counsel, environmental consultants, Home Office Legal, and Home Office Claims.
• Manage outside counsel performance and billing.
• Partner with Underwriting, Reinsurance, and other business units.
• Mentor claims staff and advise Claims Management on legislative, court, and market developments affecting claims practices.
• Safeguard the integrity of claim payments and the confidentiality of claim files.
