Job summary

Liberty Mutual Group is seeking an experienced senior environmental claims professional to own and manage complex casualty claims involving pollution and environmental coverage.

You will drive litigation strategy, supervise defense counsel, and coordinate with Home Office Legal, environmental consultants, and underwriting partners to shape resolution approaches for mass tort and complex claims.

Qualifications

• 5–7 years of commercial casualty claims experience, including environmental or pollution claims handling.
• Ability to handle complex litigated matters independently, including coverage analysis, reserving, and settlement negotiation.
• Strong command of environmental coverage issues, such as pollution liability, exclusions, and third-party bodily injury and property damage from contamination.
• Experience managing defense counsel and consultants.
• Excellent analytical, negotiation, and communication skills.
• Advanced Environmental Claims and/or Pollution Claims experience preferred.
• Experience with mass litigation and/or toxic tort required.
• Ability to obtain/maintain All-Lines Adjuster License.
• Experience with Superfund/CERCLA, remediation oversight, or environmental site claims.
• Background in law, environmental science, engineering, or a related field, or a professional designation (e.g., CPCU, AIC).
• Experience handling construction defect, toxic tort, or other complex specialty lines.

Responsibilities

• Own the claim end to end, including coverage analysis, liability evaluation, reserves, and settlements.
• Lead litigation strategy, review pleadings and materials, and set resolution plans for each suit.
• Coordinate with Home Office Legal, defense counsel, and environmental consultants as needed.
• Manage outside counsel and ensure cost control and alignment with outcomes.
• Protect confidential information and maintain integrity of financial processing in claim files.
• Mentor colleagues and serve as the claims liaison to Underwriting and Reinsurance.

Job description

Own the claim end to end. Determine coverage, investigate, assess liability, set and adjust reserves, evaluate exposure, negotiate settlements, and authorize payment. You'll also have the authority to deny claims when the facts and policy language support it. Drive litigation strategy. Review pleadings, claim files, and investigation materials, then set the plan to resolve each suit, including coverage positions, amounts owed, discovery plans, and negotiation approach. Build the right team for each matter. Based on the allegations, assemble the working group of Home Office Legal, defense counsel, and Home Office Claims, and bring in technical resources such as environmental consultants where needed. Manage outside counsel. Oversee defense counsel's strategy, practices, and billing so spend stays aligned with outcomes. Protect the claim and the data. Maintain the integrity of financial processing and the security of confidential information in claim files. Mentor and partner. Coach colleagues and serve as the claims liaison to Underwriting, Reinsurance, and other business partners. Stay ahead of the law. Track legislation, court decisions, and trends affecting pollution and other specialty coverages, and advise Claims Management on any impact to claims policies and procedures. Contribute beyond your desk. Participate in special projects that shape how the team works.

What you bring
