Job summary

H&R Block, Inc. is seeking a year-round Block Advisor Tax Advisor to prepare complete tax returns for individuals and businesses, interview clients, and provide consultative advice. The role emphasizes building lasting client relationships and identifying tax savings opportunities, all supported by comprehensive training and technology.

The position is in-person at a local Block Advisors office in Des Moines, IA, with an incentive plan tied to impact and tax expertise development.

Qualifications

• Successful completion of the H&R Block Tax Knowledge Assessment
• 5+ years of experience in tax preparation, accounting, finance, or bookkeeping
• Experience preparing complex individual returns and business returns, including tax planning, audit support, and tax notice resolution
• Experience working in a client-facing, consultative, or advisory role
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain tax concepts in client-friendly language
• Must complete continuing education and meet all other IRS and applicable state requirements
• High school diploma / GED / equivalent
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field (preferred)
• CPA or Enrolled Agent (EA) or other IRS Circular 230 credentials (preferred)
• Familiarity with GoSystem or Ultratax software (preferred)
• Familiarity with AI-powered tools (e.g., Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT) (preferred)
• Experience in a consultative or advisory client relationship role (financial advising, insurance, or professional services) (preferred)

Responsibilities

• Prepare complete, accurate tax returns for clients with diverse and complex tax situations
• Conduct in-depth client interviews to understand financial situations, life changes, and tax implications
• Provide clear, personalized recommendations to clients
• Build year-round client relationships with empathetic, consultative service
• Identify tax savings opportunities and Block Advisors products and services
• Provide IRS support, tax notice assistance, and audit guidance
• Collaborate with team members and contribute to a positive, client-focused office environment
