Job summary

SGB-SMIT USA, a division of a global transformer manufacturer, seeks a highly experienced Substation Technician. You will perform repair, testing, and maintenance on transformers, both in shop and in the field, and you will operate specialized test equipment.

This role requires travel for overnight and multi-day assignments, with overtime and weekend work as needed. Ideal candidates have 10+ years of related Substation experience, electrical theory background, and may have NETA certification or

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of commensurate Substation work experience.
  • Electrical theory education or related experience is required.
  • CDL Class A is desired but not required.
  • Military experience is a plus.
  • NETA certification is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all aspects of substation services (repair, processing & testing) and demonstrate understanding of transformers, construction operation and controls.
  • Conduct shop and field transformer testing for Power Factor, Excitation and resistance readings per NETA/ANSI standards and maintain mechanical systems including pump/valve/oil processing units.
  • Troubleshoot and test transformers using various methods and equipment, including partial installation of transformer components.
  • Perform acceptance testing and preventative maintenance per published procedures.
  • Operate specialized test equipment (DOBLE Power Factor Tester, Megohmmeters, AC/DC VOMs) and other tools.
  • Willingness to travel overnight or multi-day jobs and work overtime including nights, weekends, and some holidays.

Your tasks:
  • Ability to perform all aspects of substation services (repair, processing & testing) and demonstrate an exceptional understanding of transformers, construction operation and the associated controls.
  • Have the ability to perform in shop and field transformer testing for Power Factor, Excitation and resistance readings per NETA/ANSI Standards and maintain operational mechanical systems including pump operations, valve operations and oil processing units.
  • Troubleshoot and test transformers using various methods and testing equipment including partial installation of transformer components.
  • Conduct acceptance testing and preventative maintenance in accordance with the published testing procedures.
  • Operate specialized test equipment including but not limited to: Power Factor Tester (DOBLE), Megohmmeters, AC/DC volt-ohm-millimeters, various kinds of hand-held power and nonpower tools, etc.
  • Must be willing and able to travel on overnight, multi-day, out of town jobs and able to work regular overtime including nights, weekends and some holidays.
Your profile:
  • High School Diploma or GED REQUIRED
  • Associate's degree in industrial maintenance, Electrical/Electronic Technology preferred.
  • 10+ years of commensurate Substation work experience preferred.
  • Electrical theory education and/or related experience is required.
  • Military experience is a plus.
  • NETA certification is a plus.
  • CDL Class A is desired but not required.
