Job summary

North American Substation Services (NASS), an Asplundh Power Company, seeks a Transformer Test Technician II to perform advanced electrical testing on power transformers and related equipment in field substations. You will operate in outdoor environments, travel to generation plants, and document test results accurately.

Qualified candidates have a high school diploma or GED, a valid driver’s license, and willingness to travel up to 75% domestically with occasional international assignments.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED; supplemental electrical maintenance courses helpful.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Ability to crawl, climb, stand, and lift up to 50 lbs in high voltage substations.
  • Willingness to travel up to 75% domestically and occasional international travel.
  • Must pass fit for duty exam; flexible hours, overtime, weekends, and nights.

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced electrical testing on power transformers, including Doble Testing, TTR, winding resistance, and insulation resistance.
  • Calibrate transformer gauges and accessories (winding, oil, liquid level gauges, PRD, cooling fan operation, and rapid pressure rise relay testing).
  • Support reliability testing during scheduled plant outages and travel to generation plants.
  • Ensure safety practices and accurate documentation of test results.

Job Purpose:

This position performs routine skilled and technical support work in the inspection, repair and maintenance of transmission and distribution substation electrical equipment.

This position requires working outdoors in all weather conditions. Occasionally work is performed near moving mechanical parts, at heights, hazardous places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, temperature extremes, fumes, traffic, potential electrical shock hazards, noise pollution, and vibration.

Responsibilities

Perform advanced electrical testing on power transformers, including:

  • Doble Testing (Power Factor, Capacitance, Bushing Testing, Single Phase Excitation, TTR, Arrester Watts Loss)
  • Transformer Turns Ratio (TTR) Testing
  • Winding Resistance Measurement
  • Insulation Resistance Testing using a Megger

Conduct functional testing and calibration of transformer gauges and accessories, such as:

  • Winding Temperature Gauges
  • Oil Temperature Gauges
  • Liquid Level Gauges
  • Pressure Relief Devices (PRD)
  • Cooling Fan Operation
  • Rapid Pressure Rise Relay Testing

Support reliability testing and maintenance during scheduled plant outages

Travel to generation plants outage work:

  • Peak periods: Spring and Fall
  • Off-peak periods: Summer and Winter (alternative assignments available)
  • Ensure compliance with industry best practices, safety protocols, and maintain accurate documentation of test results
Qualifications

Required:

  • High School diploma or GED. Supplemental courses in electrical maintenance are highly desired for this position.
  • Must possess a current and valid driver’s license, and have a good driving record for this position.
  • Must be able to crawl, climb, stand, and lift up to 50 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodations in high voltage substations.
  • Must be able to pass a fit for duty exam for this position.
  • Must be available for regular overnight domestic travel and occasional international travel related to high voltage substation work.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours, overtime, and occasional weekends, holidays, and nights for this position.
  • Able and willing to travel up to 75% as needed for high voltage substation work.

Preferred:

  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
  • NCCO Crane Certification
  • Some knowledge of the fundamentals and principles of electricity preferred.
  • Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions required in working in a power distribution facility preferred.
  • Ability to learn to read and interpret electrical diagrams and prints.
  • Ability to learn to read and interpret a variety of power generation and distribution metering and recording devices.
  • Ability to learn the practices and procedures of the industry.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions.
