Job summary

ISG is seeking a Senior Physical Substation Engineer in Bloomington, MN to lead high‑voltage substation physical design packages, including layouts, bus work, grounding, conduit, and equipment placement. You will ensure designs meet client, utility, and regulatory standards while optimizing safety, reliability, and constructability.

You will mentor junior staff, review deliverables, and serve as the primary client contact for technical issues on projects such as FirstEnergy initiatives within

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering required (power focus).
• 5+ years in substation physical design with leadership on medium to large projects.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license is required.
• Proficiency with drawing markup and CAD operations.
• Experience with grounding analysis software and lighting analysis tools.
• Experience with lighting analysis software is preferred.
• Experience with Substation Design Suite (SDS) and Inventor is a plus.
• Strong understanding of substation equipment and configurations.
• Knowledge of IEEE, ANSI, NESC, NEC, NFPA, OSHA codes.

Responsibilities

• Develops and reviews complete physical design packages for high‑voltage substations, including: one‑line diagrams, GA drawings, bus layouts, grounding layouts, conduit and cable routing.
• Ensures compliance with utility, client, and regulatory standards (IEEE, ANSI, NEC, NESC, NFPA).
• Optimizes substation layouts for safety, reliability, constructability, and cost efficiency.
• Oversees integration of civil/structural and protection & control requirements into the physical design.
• Performs and reviews grounding, voltage drop, conduit fill, and other calculations.
• Reviews and approves design packages for accuracy and completeness.
• Leads design coordination meetings with clients, utilities, vendors, and internal teams.
• Acts as technical point of contact for clients on complex design challenges.
• Mentors junior engineers and reviews their work with feedback.
• Forecasts design hours and supports schedules and budgets.
• Recommends process improvements to increase efficiency and quality.
• Stays current with emerging technologies and industry standards.
