Job summary

The Hartford is seeking an accomplished Sr Staff Attorney to lead subrogation and related insurance defense matters from intake to trial. This role is primarily remote for a California-based attorney, with periodic in-person appearances and travel within the state as needed.

You will manage complex litigation, draft pleadings, take depositions, and advise Claims partners. The ideal candidate has 5+ years of litigation experience, California bar admission, first-chair trial or appellate

Qualifications

• JD from an accredited law school and CA bar admission.
• Domicile in California with active license to practice in CA.
• Member in good standing of the CA Bar Association.
• 5+ years of relevant litigation experience including subrogation and insurance defense.
• First-chair jury trial and/or appellate experience preferred.
• Strong legal writing, research, and persuasive advocacy skills.
• Ability to manage a caseload independently and meet deadlines.
• Familiarity with California courts and local practices.
• Highly organized and comfortable in a technology-driven environment.

Responsibilities

• Manage an inventory of subrogation and related insurance defense matters from inception through trial.
• Draft pleadings, responses, motions, and briefs with minimal supervision.
• Take depositions, work with experts, and prepare witnesses for testimony.
• Represent clients at trials, hearings, mediations, and ADR proceedings.
• Provide timely legal advice and liability/damages evaluations to Claims partners.
• Communicate effectively with courts, opposing counsel, witnesses, and co-counsel.
• Drive efficient disposition of cases while maintaining quality and client service.
