Job description

Job Title : Senior Structural Engineer – Existing Building and Facades

Location : New York, NY

Position Overview : We are seeking a seasoned Structural Engineer with 5–10+ years of experience, ideally closer to 10, to join our team specializing in existing buildings and facades. This role involves managing and designing structural modifications to major commercial buildings in New York City, from reinforcing floors for high-density storage to retrofitting columns, creating new stair openings, and handling various tenant-requested upgrades. You’ll work as part of a multi-disciplinary team on high-rise buildings, contributing your expertise in design, detailing, and project management.

Key Responsibilities :

• Project Management : Oversee projects from concept to completion, including coordinating with architects, clients, and contractors. Ensure consistent workflow with autonomy and ownership of project timelines and deliverables.
• Structural Design and Detailing : Perform structural analysis and detailing, particularly focused on retrofits and reinforcements in existing buildings. Responsibilities include designing beams, spandrels, and connections for both facades and interiors.
• Technical Expertise : Conduct full lateral analysis and capacity reviews to determine structural requirements for various building components, with an understanding that facade structures are integral parts of the larger building system.
• Collaboration : Work closely with architects and other engineers, often in a sub-consultant role, to execute design modifications for major real estate owners.
• Facade Specialization : Develop and execute facade-focused structural solutions with the knowledge that facade elements require detailed retrofitting and adherence to unique design standards.

Qualifications :

• Experience : 5–10+ years in structural engineering, preferably in existing building work. Experience in facades is beneficial but not mandatory if a strong background in structural design and detailing is evident.
• Licensure : PE licensure in New York State preferred, or eligibility to sit for the exam. QPSI certification (or eligibility for it) is highly desired.
• Technical Skills : Proficiency in engineering software for structural analysis, with the ability to detail and retrofit structural components in a way that is applicable across both interior and exterior building elements.
• Project Leadership : Strong project management skills, with the capacity to handle multiple projects, provide mentorship, and ensure quality and timely delivery.

Ideal Candidate : A well-rounded structural engineer who understands the nuances of working on existing buildings, including the ability to perform structural analysis and project management. Candidates with a background that includes detailing, design, and practical experience in a range of structural elements are preferred.
