Job summary

Luckett & Farley is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer in Louisville, KY to lead complex structural design across diverse building types. You will mentor junior staff, shape project plans, and collaborate with project leadership from concept to construction administration.

Your expertise will define design quality and client satisfaction within a collaborative ESOP environment. You will supervise staffing, pricing, and resource allocation while representing the firm in markets served.

Qualifications

  • Education: BS or MS in Civil Engineering with structural emphasis from ABET-accredited program.
  • Experience: 10+ years with progressive responsibility.
  • Licensure: PE license; SE preferred.
  • Software: proficiency in RAM Structural System/Elements, SAP2000, ETABS, Woodworks or similar; Revit proficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the structural engineering design effort for complex projects with minimal supervision.
  • Prepare preliminary designs and select appropriate structural systems.
  • Mentor junior engineers and designers; lead teaching discussions with professionalism.
  • Manage project staffing and resources; ensure on-time, on-budget delivery.
  • Develop fee proposals, scopes of work, and contracts coordination.

Role Summary

As a Senior Structural Engineer, you will be a core team member on our most complex projects, bringing hands‑on experience across all building types alongside the curiosity, vision, and passion for architecture and engineering design that defines our culture.

You will work closely with project leadership from early concept through construction administration, contributing meaningful design and technical expertise across a diverse portfolio while supporting the broader Structural discipline as needed. The role carries real leadership weight: you will mentor the engineers coming up behind you, shape how work is planned and priced, and represent Luckett & Farley in the markets we serve.

Key Responsibilities
Design Excellence & Technical Leadership (Design + Sustainability)
  • Independently leads the structural engineering design effort for assigned projects with minimal supervision.
  • Prepares preliminary designs and selects appropriate structural systems.
  • Troubleshoots analysis problems and resolves complex or novel technical challenges.
  • Performs quality control and constructability reviews.
  • Takes full ownership of and manages all discipline aspects of projects from conception through completion.
  • Mentors and teaches junior‑level engineers and designers with patience and professionalism, fostering a supportive and collaborative learning environment; provides guidance on design concepts and leads teaching discussions with approachability and respect.
  • Collaborates with other Senior Structural Engineers to manage workload distribution and project resources and ensure appropriate staffing of projects.
  • Recruits and interviews job candidates in partnership with the Discipline Manager and HR.
  • Demonstrates strong emotional intelligence, fostering collaboration and building positive relationships with clients and co‑owners.
Project Delivery & Productivity (Productivity + Client)
  • Assists the Discipline Manager with developing project plans and budgets, including all staffing and resource needs.
  • Assists the Discipline Manager with setting discipline project milestones, deadlines, and profitability targets, and monitors that they are met.
  • Completes project closeout requirements, including financial, archiving, marketing, and lessons learned.
  • Monitors staffing and resource needs and reports up to the Discipline Manager.
  • Actively supports the strategic goals of the firm, departments, and managers, and understands how personal actions contribute to them.
Client Focus & Business Development (Client)
  • Assists with developing fee proposals, including preparation of scopes of work, determination of structural fees, coordination of marketing and resume materials, and coordination of contracts.
  • Plans and conducts internal and external project meetings as required.
  • Monitors scope creep to determine whether additional services are warranted.
  • Clearly explains complex concepts to diverse audiences, adapting communication style to suit varying levels of understanding and expertise.
  • Present and articulates ideas with professionalism, tact, and confidence, ensuring a positive representation of themselves and the firm.
  • Promotes Luckett & Farley’s services and reputation in local markets by participating in appropriate industry, professional, and community organizations.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Education: BS or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering with a Structural emphasis from an ABET-accredited institution, Required
  • Experience: 10+ years of experience with progressive increase in responsibility, Required
  • Licensure: Professional registration as a PE (SE preferred), Required
  • Software: Excellent working knowledge of and proficiency with building analysis and design software for concrete, steel, and wood, such as RAM Structural System, RAM Elements, SAP2000, ETABS, Woodworks, or similar, Required
  • Technical Proficiency: Working knowledge of Revit, Required
  • Communication: Excellent communication and organization skills; able to explain complex technical concepts to varied audiences with professionalism and tact, Required
  • Project Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead the structural effort on complex projects from concept through construction administration, Required
