Role Overview
We are seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to lead structural design and project delivery across a variety of commercial, municipal, and private-sector projects. Howell's structural services support our internal civil engineering and land development teams while providing structural design for building, infrastructure, and site-related projects.This role combines hands‑on structural engineering with technical leadership and project oversight. The ideal candidate brings strong experience designing foundations, retaining walls, site‑related structures, and structural components for buildings and infrastructure, along with the judgment to resolve complex design challenges and deliver practical, well‑coordinated solutions.The Senior Structural Engineer will take ownership of structural assignments from initial planning through construction, mentor junior engineers, and serve as a technical resource for clients and project teams. This person will collaborate closely with Howell's civil engineering, survey, and environmental teams, as well as architects, contractors, and clients.
Responsibilities
- Lead structural analysis and design for foundations, retaining walls, building structures, and other infrastructure and site‑related components
- Manage structural project scope, schedules, budgets, and deliverables from concept through construction
- Prepare and review structural calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical documentation for accuracy, constructability, and compliance with applicable codes and standards
- Serve as the responsible Professional Engineer for assigned work, including signing and sealing documents within the scope of licensure and responsible charge
- Coordinate structural designs with civil engineering site plans, grading designs, architectural plans, and other project disciplines
- Evaluate design alternatives and resolve technical challenges with practical, cost‑conscious solutions
- Lead structural coordination with clients, architects, contractors, permitting agencies, and other project stakeholders
- Provide construction‑phase support, including reviewing submittals, responding to RFIs, and conducting site observations as needed
- Oversee structural permitting submissions and address agency review comments
- Mentor junior engineers, provide technical guidance, and review their work
- Support proposals through scope development, fee estimates, and technical input
- Contribute to structural design standards, quality‑control practices, and the continued development of Howell's structural services
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a structural concentration or a related discipline
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required; Pennsylvania licensure or ability to obtain through reciprocity
- 7+ years of progressively responsible structural engineering design experience in a consulting environment
- Demonstrated experience independently leading structural design assignments and managing project delivery
- Strong technical knowledge of foundations, retaining walls, building structural systems, and site‑related structures
- Experience designing with concrete, steel, masonry, and wood
- Thorough understanding of applicable building codes, structural design standards, and loading requirements
- Proficiency in structural analysis and design software
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD; familiarity with Civil 3D coordination preferred
- Experience reviewing engineering calculations and drawings and providing clear technical direction
- Strong communication skills and the ability to build effective relationships with clients and multidisciplinary project teams
- Sound engineering judgment, strong attention to detail, and a commitment to high‑quality work
- Ability to manage competing priorities while supporting and mentoring junior staff
