Job summary

HDR is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer (Water) in Pittsburgh to lead structural design for water and wastewater projects, mentor staff, and coordinate with architecture, MEP, and civil teams. You will drive technical decisions and ensure deliverables meet safety and quality standards.

The role requires a PE license, 10+ years of building-structure experience, and the ability to manage projects from schematic design through construction documents in HDR's collaborative, employee-owned

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering; PE license required.
• Minimum of 10 years' structural engineering experience related to buildings.
• Professional Engineer license recognized by the local board (PE/P.Eng).
• Experience with AutoCAD, RAM, ETABS, SAFE or similar tools.
• Ability to design and detail steel, concrete, masonry and wood structures.

Responsibilities

• Serve as technical expert in structural engineering for projects of greater scope.
• Plan, organize and supervise medium to large staff of professionals and technicians.
• Coordinate and lead multidiscipline teams to deliver structural deliverables.
• Perform construction administration tasks including RFI responses and submittals.
• Prepare calculations, write specifications, and select materials and sizes.
• Mentor structural interns and EITs within the department.

In the role of Senior Structural Engineer (Water), we'll count on you to:

• Serve as a technical expert with recognized authority in structural engineering as it relates to projects; resolve problems of greater scope and complexity
• Prior experience with water / wastewater projectsPlan and develop projects or design activities
• Plan, organize and supervise work of medium to large staff of professionals and technicians
• Serve as Project Manager on larger projects, though project management is not sole focus of position
• Independently coordinate the work of the structural design team from schematic design through the design development and contract document phases of a project.
• Collaborate as part of a multi-disciplinary team (architecture, MEP engineering, civil engineering, etc.) to lead the production of the structural deliverables for projects.
• Mentor and train structural interns and EITs within the department and across business groups
• Coordinate workload throughout the design phases to complete the documents on schedule.
• Perform construction administration (CA) tasks such as submittal review, respond to requests for information (RFI's) and other coordination tasks with contractors in the field during construction.
• Coordinate and assist with affected disciplines, with any addendum, change proposal requests and change orders, and incorporate agreed-upon changes into the project documents.
• Write and edit structural specifications, select procedures, materials and their respective sizes, and complete necessary calculations.
• Perform other duties as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or Architectural Engineering, Structural emphasis
• Experience with Structural Engineering or projects serving Water and Wastewater Clients
• A minimum of 10+ years of structural engineering experience preferred

Required Qualifications

• Requires understanding of gravity analysis and lateral analysis
• Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm
