Job summary

HDR is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer (Water) in Pittsburgh to lead structural design for water and wastewater projects within a multi-disciplinary team. You’ll serve as a technical expert, coordinate with architecture, MEP, and civil teams, and guide project delivery from schematic through documents.

With a PE license, you’ll mentor staff, manage design development, perform calculations, ensure code compliance, and help build resilient, sustainable infrastructure.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • A minimum of 10 years structural engineering experience as it relates to building design.
  • Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license recognized by the licensing board for the position location.
  • Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, RAM, ETABS, SAFE or similar analytical software.
  • Experience in design calculations and layouts.
  • Ability to design and detail in steel, concrete, masonry and wood.
  • Understanding of gravity and lateral analysis.
  • Experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm.
  • Active participation in employee-owned culture required.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a technical expert with authority in structural engineering for projects; resolve complex problems.
  • Plan and develop projects or design activities.
  • Supervise work of medium to large staff of professionals and technicians.
  • Serve as Project Manager on larger projects, though PM is not sole focus.
  • Coordinate structural design team from schematic design through contract documents.
  • Lead production of structural deliverables with multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Mentor and train structural interns and EITs.
  • Coordinate workload to meet schedules.
  • Perform construction administration tasks such as submittal reviews and RFIs.
  • Incorporate changes into project documents.
  • Write and edit structural specifications and perform calculations.

In the role of Senior Structural Engineer (Water), we'll count on you to:

  • Serve as a technical expert with recognized authority in structural engineering as it relates to projects; resolve problems of greater scope and complexity
  • Prior experience with water / wastewater projectsPlan and develop projects or design activities
  • Plan, organize and supervise work of medium to large staff of professionals and technicians
  • Serve as Project Manager on larger projects, though project management is not sole focus of position
  • Independently coordinate the work of the structural design team from schematic design through the design development and contract document phases of a project.
  • Collaborate as part of a multi-disciplinary team (architecture, MEP engineering, civil engineering, etc.) to lead the production of the structural deliverables for projects.
  • Mentor and train structural interns and EITs within the department and across business groups
  • Coordinate workload throughout the design phases to complete the documents on schedule.
  • Perform construction administration (CA) tasks such as submittal review, respond to requests for information (RFI’s) and other coordination tasks with contractors in the field during construction.
  • Coordinate and assist with affected disciplines, with any addendum, change proposal requests and change orders, and incorporate agreed-upon changes into the project documents.
  • Write and edit structural specifications, select procedures, materials and their respective sizes, and complete necessary calculations.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or Architectural Engineering, Structural emphasis
  • Experience with Structural Engineering or projects serving Water and Wastewater Clients
  • A minimum of 10+ years of structural engineering experience preferred
