Job Description Senior Structural Design Engineer
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this position is to provide essential administrative processes, technical knowledge, and leadership. This position oversees a specific area and acts as a representative of the engineering discipline, ensuring technical accuracy in project execution across all phases. It is a lead position on assigned projects, performing engineering assignments of advanced complexity.
Responsibilities include:
- Serving as an Area Lead under the supervision of the Discipline Lead Engineer, providing guidance and supervision to other engineers and designers.
- Analyzing and making independent recommendations regarding technical solutions to complex problems in accordance with project requirements.
- Developing and reviewing specifications and design criteria.
- Performing and checking engineering analyses and calculations; specifying materials, equipment, and systems; solving technical problems of advanced complexity.
- Coordinating technical issues with other disciplines, project management, vendors, and clients.
- Executing work in compliance with the Project Quality Plan and procedures.
- Ensuring work aligns with the approved project scope, cost, and schedule baselines.
- Developing and reviewing estimates, schedules, and progress reports, including effort-hour estimating and staff forecasting.
- Establishing, controlling, and reporting on material key quantities; providing analysis and forecasts.
- Supporting activities related to equipment and material procurement and subcontracting, including scope of work, technical bid evaluations, and review of vendor submittals.
- Providing technical support for construction administration, including responses to RFIs and field changes.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Education Requirements
Bachelor of Science in Civil or Structural Engineering with a minimum of ten (10) years of relevant experience.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Professional Engineer license.
- Working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local codes and standards, including Department of Energy orders.
- Effective communication skills with diverse audiences.
- Technical knowledge necessary to complete the job.
- Advanced knowledge of discipline codes and standards.
- Ability to perform work in compliance with applicable codes, statutes, and guidelines.
- Attention to detail and ability to work efficiently within time constraints.
- Proficiency in computer skills, including word processing, email, spreadsheets, and presentations.
- Significant experience in EPC services on large industrial projects.
- Experience with engineering analysis, 3D modeling, and CAD tools in a multi-discipline environment.
- Design and analysis experience with steel and concrete structures or commodity supports.
- Proficiency in STAADPro, Excel, and MathCad.
- Knowledge of relevant codes such as ACI 318-14, 349-13, AISC N690-18, ASCE 7-16, 4-16, 43-19, and IBC-2018.
- Ability to work in a diverse environment.
- Satisfactory pre-employment screening.
Discipline Specific Job Requirements
- Performing calculations for foundations, concrete, and steel structures.
- Advanced knowledge of structural design software such as STAAD, STAADPro, and RISA3D.
- Advanced knowledge of Mathcad.
- Analyzing complex structures, wind and seismic loading, dynamic analysis, and computer modeling.
Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge of material availability and costs.
- Experience with nuclear facility design under ASME NQA-1.
- Management and leadership experience on large projects.
- Proficiency in project setup, scheduling, progress reporting, and project close-out.
- Practical field experience.
- EPC project experience in industries such as DOE, nuclear, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology.
Location
Position is 100% onsite in Greenville, SC. Candidates must be local or willing to relocate at their own expense.
