Altana is seeking an experienced Backend Engineer to join a fully remote or hub-based team across New York City, Boston, Washington D.C., and San Francisco. You will design, build, and maintain scalable APIs and data-driven services, collaborating with data scientists and product managers to deliver impactful features.

The role emphasizes delivering incremental releases from PoC to production, mentoring engineers, and upholding engineering excellence across complex systems.

Qualifications

• 12+ years of real-world professional experience writing back end or data-driven software in demanding environments.
• You’ve deployed production code and services to cloud-hosted environments.
• You have demonstrated experience delivering incremental releases from proof-of-concept to MVP to production.
• Self-starter with demonstrated experience working on large, complex problems.
• You care deeply about engineering excellence, clean code, and knowledge-sharing.
• You have experience with taking over codebases and making them your own, carrying forward with new feature development.

Responsibilities

• Ingest product requirements, define technical requirements, and design practical, iterative technology designs.
• Work with your product manager to develop implementation plans against our technical product roadmaps.
• Maintain, develop, and deploy our customer facing workflows to support the product architecture.
• Analyze and propose technical solutions to enhance our product offerings.
• Automate, test, and deploy your own and your team’s work.
• Review code and designs, maintaining a high bar for quality.
• Mentor developers and help them level up their skills.
• Drive technical decision-making and ensure scalable, maintainable solutions.
• Identify gaps and create plans to address them.
• Serve as domain expert for portions of the product surface area.
