Job summary

BILL is seeking a Staff ML Engineer to raise the technical bar across our AI/ML organization, spanning LLM-based extraction, fine-tuned models, and data foundations. You will mentor engineers and shape production deployment.

This senior individual-contributor role combines hands-on model training with setting multi-quarter technical direction, collaborating with product and platform leadership to deliver measurable business impact.

Qualifications

• 8+ years in software/ML engineering with senior-level scope.
• Experience fine-tuning LLMs and taking models to production at scale.
• Knowledge of document AI and OCR pipelines (LayoutLM/Donut).
• Production experience in recommender systems, personalization, or search/ranking.

Responsibilities

• Own end-to-end ML initiatives from framing to production deployment and measurement.
• Prototype, fine-tune, and ship models; write production code.
• Lead LLM strategy, evaluation harnesses, and build-vs-buy decisions.
• Translate literature to practice; design rigorous experiments with ablations.
• Design data flywheel with labeling, human-in-the-loop, and drift monitoring.
• Set standards for model evaluation, reproducibility, and governance.
• Mentor senior and mid-level ML engineers and influence roadmaps.
