Job summary

BILL is hiring a Staff ML Engineer to lead end-to-end ML initiatives, shaping ML systems across LLM-based extraction, fine-tuned models, and intelligent routing. You will mentor engineers and steer multi-quarter technical direction while training and evaluating models in production.

Qualifications

• 8+ years in software/ML engineering with a Staff level or equivalent.
• Experience fine-tuning LLMs and production-scale models.
• Document AI / OCR pipelines and layout-aware models (LayoutLM/Donut).
• Production experience in recommender systems, personalization, or search/ranking.
• Strong data reasoning, evaluation design, and AB testing.
• Research-oriented mindset with shipping discipline and business impact.
• Mentor engineers and influence roadmaps.

Responsibilities

• Own technical direction for high-impact ML initiatives end to end, from problem framing to production deployment and measurement.
• Stay hands-on: prototype, fine-tune, and ship models; write production code with engineers you mentor.
• Lead our LLM strategy, fine-tuning, and build-vs-buy decisions between self-hosted and frontier API models.
• Translate literature into practice; design rigorous experiments and ablations for production.
• Design the data flywheel: labeling pipelines, human-in-the-loop feedback, drift monitoring.
• Set engineering standards for model evaluation, reproducibility, and deployment.
• Mentor and multiply: grow senior and mid-level ML engineers; influence roadmaps.
