Job summary

SmithRx seeks an experienced Data Engineer to lead the design and delivery of scalable data pipelines for a health-tech platform. You will collaborate with analytics, ML, and product teams to turn data into actionable insights, while enforcing governance and security standards.

You will mentor engineers, influence cross-functional roadmaps, and communicate strategic data initiatives to executives. This role centers on building robust distributed systems in a fast-paced startup environment.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of industrial data engineering experience or 12+ years with a related undergrad degree.
• Proven mastery of data modeling, database design, and data warehouse technologies (Snowflake).
• Strong skills in PySpark, SQL, and Python; knowledge of C#/C++, Go, Java, or Scala is a plus.
• Hands-on experience with ETL tools: Spark, Airflow, dbt, Looker, Superset.
• Experience managing the data lifecycle with distributed data processing systems.
• Decision-making track record prioritizing broader engineering goals in ambiguous environments.

Responsibilities

• Define long-term data engineering strategy aligned with company priorities.
• Design pipelines and API boundaries to simplify infrastructure.
• Make build vs buy decisions and review designs to mitigate risks.
• Improve developer efficiency and establish engineering best practices.
• Deliver scalable features with monitoring, metrics, and reliability.
• Enforce data governance, including PII/PHI protection and data quality.
• Influence cross-functional roadmaps and mentor engineers.
