Job summary

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) seeks a Senior Staff Attorney or Staff Attorney to join the Inclusion and Anti-Extremism (IAE) Advocacy and Litigation Team. The attorney will investigate, develop, and litigate cases challenging hate groups and white supremacists, advancing rights for communities targeted by hate in the South and beyond.

The role demands experience in federal and state courts, collaboration with community partners, and commitment to SPLC’s mission and values.

Qualifications

• Staff Attorney I-II: At least one year of federal court civil litigation or comparable experience post law school.
• Senior Staff I-IV: At least six years of federal court civil litigation or comparable experience post law school.
• Membership in good standing of at least one state bar in the United States; preferably Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, or Washington, D.C.
• J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school.

Responsibilities

• Draft briefs, motions, memos, written discovery, and other documents in support of litigation.
• Conduct depositions and represent clients in court.
• Represent SPLC in various fora, including federal and state courts, community groups and coalitions, media outlets, and federal and state agencies among others.
• Develop new cases and campaigns in consultation with SPLC staff and community partners.
• Investigate, gather information, and interview clients and witnesses.
• Respond to requests for legal assistance.
• Research and write legal memos and briefs on complex legal and factual questions.
• Senior Staff Attorneys train and mentor legal staff and interns.
• Perform other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification.
