About the Role

Senior Radiation Effects Engineer for Amazon Leo responsible for ensuring avionics and payload hardware reliability across a LEO satellite constellation by performing radiation analysis, component qualification, testing, and failure investigations to maintain on-orbit performance.

Job Description
Role

As a Senior Radiation Effects Engineer on the Amazon Leo team you will ensure avionics and payload hardware performance across a low Earth orbit satellite constellation by performing radiation analysis, defining test methods, qualifying components, and investigating on-orbit radiation events.

Key Responsibilities
  • Define, collect, and analyze TID, heavy ion, and proton test data to qualify components and build a component test database.
  • Determine system-level impacts of radiation-induced failures and lead root-cause analysis for on-orbit radiation events.
  • Qualify electronic components including microcontrollers, memory devices, FPGAs, and power management hardware.
  • Provide guidance to electrical design engineers on selection and use of radiation-sensitive components.
  • Develop processes, testing standards, and documentation practices for component and flight PCBA radiation tests.
  • Develop tools and dashboards to organize and visualize on-orbit events and test results.
  • Work with supply chain and component reliability teams and review PCN changes to maintain radiation qualification status.
Requirements
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience in electrical engineering.
  • 3+ years of experience in spaceflight avionics development, parts selection, and radiation testing.
  • 3+ years of system design and component qualification experience with radiation environments and radiation-tolerant hardware.
  • Demonstrated understanding of single-event effects (SEE) and total ionizing dose (TID) impacts on electronic systems.
  • Experience with one or more radiation environment modeling tools such as IRENE, OMERE, SIRE2, SPENVIS, OLTARIS, CREME96, SAPPHIRE, ESP, or PSYCHIC.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Physics.
  • Experience with radiation transport codes (e.g., NOVICE, FASTRAD, SHIELDOSE2, GEANT4, MCNP).
  • Experience with NASA, defense, or commercial space programs and vehicle-level reliability models.
  • Experience with component selection, reliability assessment, and hardware troubleshooting (PCBA, ICs, sensors).
  • Familiarity with Python, LabView, or AI-vibe coding, and AWS tools such as S3 and DynamoDB.
Export Control Requirement

Due to export control laws, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
