Position Summary
GEICO is seeking an experienced Senior Engineer passionate about building high-performance, low-maintenance, zero-downtime platforms and applications. You will help drive our insurance business transformation as we transition from a traditional IT model to a tech organization with engineering excellence as its mission, fostering a culture of psychological safety and continuous improvement.
Position Description
Our Engineers collaborate with Sr Staff Engineers to innovate, build new systems, improve existing ones, and identify new opportunities to apply your knowledge to solve critical problems. You will lead the strategy and execution of a technical roadmap to increase product delivery velocity and unlock new engineering capabilities. The ideal candidate has deep expertise in the Open-Source Observability and Data platform domains.
Position Responsibilities
- Provide technical and thought leadership across multiple areas of the enterprise.
- Collaborate with product managers, team members, customers, and other engineering teams to solve complex problems.
- Develop and execute technical strategies for the Observability Engineering domain.
- Ensure the quality, usability, and performance of solutions.
- Mentor and coach team members, influence executives, and share best practices.
- Analyze costs, forecast, and incorporate findings into business plans.
- Support resource requirements, evaluate operational processes, and demonstrate adaptability and continuous learning.
- Willing to take on-call and operational support duties.
Qualifications
- Hands-on experience building complex distributed systems to process large-scale telemetry, with knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes.
- Proficiency in at least one OOP language such as Java, Go, or Python.
- Understanding of open-source databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL databases (Clickhouse, Cassandra, Apache Trino), along with big data formats like Parquet or Avro.
- Experience architecting and designing Observability platform solutions and advanced data analytics using open-source technologies.
- Experience building distributed systems.
- Excellent communication skills for leading projects and interacting with clients and sponsors.
- Experience with continuous delivery (CI/CD), Infrastructure as Code, and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).
- Strong knowledge of CS data structures and algorithms.
- Ability to solve analytical problems with quantitative approaches.
- Experience with Windows Server administration and Windows Event Log.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, startup-like environment and work on both development and operational tasks.
- Knowledge of developer tooling across the software development lifecycle and big data/streaming data pipeline architectures.
- Experience with open-source tools like GIT, Jenkins, CircleCI, Terraform, Ansible is a plus.
- Knowledge of ML and AI technologies, and open-source monitoring software like Grafana and Prometheus.
Experience
- 3+ years in software development, platform architecture, administration, governance, or infrastructure management.
- 3+ years working with open-source frameworks.
- 1+ years in architecture and design roles.
- 3+ years of experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure, or hybrid data centers).
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience.
Salary Range
$90,000 - $215,000 annually. Final compensation depends on experience, education, location, and market factors. GEICO does not sponsor employment authorization for this role at this time.
