Job summary

The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene seeks an experienced Software Engineer/Developer IV to lead in-house applications, LIMS systems, and data interfaces. You will design, develop, and support enterprise-level software, collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams, and guide junior engineers in a hybrid on-site/remote environment.

Initial on-site training is followed by possible hybrid work at manager discretion; strong focus on security, CI/CD, testing, and scalable architectures.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated knowledge and experience developing applications using Java and IDEs such as Eclipse or equivalent tools.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with Oracle and SQL Server databases, including advanced SQL skills and database design.
• Experience with DevOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines, automated builds, deployments, and testing.
• Experience with web application development, including secure development practices and mitigation of cybersecurity threats.
• Experience with software quality assurance and testing, including developing test plans, test cases, and automated or manual test scripts.
• Demonstrated technical leadership through mentoring, architecture and code reviews, stakeholder influence, and delivery of customer-focused outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Research and implement new development tools and infrastructure.
• Research and develop ways to automate and improve development and release processes.
• Develop data structures and system performance strategies.
• Train and provide technical guidance to lower level staff.
• Review system requirements, design, and business processes to align with IT and business strategies.
• Provide support to labs to find solutions for testing, reporting and research needs.
• Lead application development, integration upgrades, and maintenance projects.
• Conduct system analysis and develop detailed design specifications for system integration and upgrades.
• Consult with clients on project status, proposals, or technical issues.
• Ensure systems are safe and secure against cybersecurity threats.
• Design and develop well integrated applications meeting current and future business needs.
• Determine testing methodologies and manage development and implementation of test plans.
