Job summary

Pearson in the United States is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to design, develop, and deliver scalable, secure software across Pearson's Higher Education Digital platforms. You will lead complex initiatives, mentor engineers, and drive modernization with cloud-native architectures and AI-assisted practices.

You'll collaborate with product, architecture, security, QA, and operations to ensure quality, reliability, and fast delivery while upholding Pearson values and engineering excellence.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, IT, or related field.
• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Experience leading complex initiatives and delivering cross-team solutions.
• Experience designing, deploying, and supporting cloud-native applications.
• Experience in Agile environments.
• Experience with globally distributed teams.
• Proven ability to influence technical decisions without direct managerial authority.
• Experience supporting production systems and customer-facing apps.
• Mentoring engineers and promoting engineering best practices.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, deploy, and support enterprise-scale software applications and services.
• Lead complex technical initiatives spanning multiple systems and teams.
• Ensure solutions meet high standards for quality, security, performance, and reliability.
• Participate in architecture discussions and provide technical guidance.
• Drive modernization: CI/CD, automated testing, DevOps, observability, cloud-native architecture.
• Leverage AI-assisted development tools to improve productivity and quality.
• Collaborate with Product Management, Architecture, Security, QA, and Operations to achieve outcomes.
• Provide technical leadership through code reviews, design reviews, and mentoring.
• Troubleshoot production issues and drive root-cause analysis and preventative improvements.
• Identify risks and communicate them to stakeholders; provide realistic estimates.
