Job summary

Google is seeking software engineers to work on Beam and related platforms, contributing across full-stack development, from low-level systems to Android-based products. The role emphasizes leadership, adaptation to fast-paced projects, and collaboration across teams.

Selected candidates will help design, implement, and optimize software for Beam hardware, onboard documentation, and improve system reliability, networking, and security. This is a high-impact position within a dynamic environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in CS, Math, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of software development using C++, Java, or Kotlin.
  • 3 years testing, maintaining, or launching software; 1 year in design/architecture (systems programming or hardware integration).
  • 2 years of Android Platform, Android Internals, or AOSP; experience with IP configs, firewalls, ports.

Responsibilities

  • Write and test product or system development code (C++/Kotlin/Java) for Beam hardware peripherals.
  • Lead design reviews to decide technologies for Beam OS, startup stability, networking.
  • Review code and provide feedback on style, quality, testability, and efficiency.
  • Contribute to docs and developer content; update with product changes.
  • Triage issues and debug networking/configuration impacts on devices.

Job description

  • Baby Bonding Leave: 18 weeks

Minimum qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages such as C++, Java, or Kotlin.
  • 3 years of experience testing, maintaining, or launching software products, and 1 year of experience with software design and architecture, specifically in systems programming or custom hardware-software integration.
  • 2 years of experience with the Android Platform, Android Internals, or the Android Open Source Project (AOSP).
  • Experience with low-level system debugging, core operating systems concepts, and network configurations (including IP configurations, firewall rules, and ports exposed).
Preferred qualifications
  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field.
  • 5 years of experience with data structures and algorithms and software design patterns in embedded or low-level systems.
  • 2 years of experience working on shipped Android-based or Linux-based consumer electronics or custom hardware devices, including device driver development, system performance tuning, and thermal configuration.
  • 1 year of experience in a technical leadership role, guiding engineering direction or coordinating technical deliverables for a software team.
  • Experience developing accessible technologies and implementing Android accessibility standards.

  • Write and test product or system development code (C++/Kotlin/Java) to control Beam custom hardware peripherals like cameras, displays, power, and thermal systems.
  • Participate in, or lead design reviews with peers and stakeholders to decide amongst available technologies for Beam OS infrastructure, startup stability, and networking.
  • Review code developed by other developers and provide feedback to ensure best practices (e.g., style guidelines, checking code in, accuracy, testability, and efficiency).
  • Contribute to existing documentation or educational content and adapt content based on product/program updates and user feedback for developer workflows.
  • Triage product or system issues and debug/track/resolve by analyzing the sources of issues and the impact on hardware, network, or service operations and quality, owning local networking configurations, firewall rules, and exposed ports on the device.
