Job summary

Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP seeks a Senior Software Engineer to join the Knowledge & Innovation team. You will design, build, and operate production-grade software powering legal tech and AI initiatives, spanning frontend, backend, and infrastructure.

You’ll own CI/CD, observability, and integrations across systems while collaborating with data scientists and attorneys. You’ll contribute to AI-powered tooling, translate legal requirements into robust software, and engage with legal staff to

Qualifications

• 7+ years of software engineering experience with progressive scope.
• Strong full-stack skills across JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Node.js, and Python.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS and/or Azure), infrastructure-as-code (Terraform/Bicep), and CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions or equivalent).
• Practical experience with AI/LLM integration in production systems, or strong aptitude and interest in developing it.
• Experience with agentic coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Codex).
• Comfort working with non-technical stakeholders, able to demo work and explain decisions clearly.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain custom software solutions supporting Knowledge & Innovation initiatives, including AI-powered tools and integrations with Firm systems.
• Contribute to architectural decisions balancing speed, reliability, and maintainability.
• Build and extend integrations across SaaS platforms and data sources.
• Develop frontend experiences and design system foundations for growth.
• Own engineering infrastructure: CI/CD pipelines, IaC, deployment tooling.
• Establish observability practices: monitoring, logging, alerting.
• Collaborate with IT on security and deployment targets.
• Develop AI-powered tools and support adoption by legal staff.
