Job summary

Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP seeks a Data Scientist to drive insights for leadership, legal practices, and Knowledge & Innovation. You will apply statistics, ML, NLP, and deep learning to structured and unstructured data, building models and systems that advance the Firm’s AI initiatives.

You will collaborate with lawyers and staff, develop deployment-ready NLP workflows, and produce visual reports that are accessible to non‑technical audiences.

Qualifications

• 2+ years in data science/AI role or PhD in related field
• Proficient in Python and databases (SQL)
• Experience developing and validating regression and classification models
• Experience with data transformation, visualization libraries (pandas, scikit-learn, matplotlib, Seaborn)
• Familiar with NLP libraries (Hugging Face Transformers, spaCy, NLTK)
• Ability to design ML systems beyond notebooks; knowledge of TensorFlow or PyTorch a plus
• Git for version control; translate business problems to technical solutions
• Ability to clearly communicate results to non‑technical audiences
• Experience in the legal field is a plus

Responsibilities

• Support legal teams and operations in data‑driven decision making
• Collaborate with Finance, IT, Business Development and others to analyze data and create solutions
• Develop regression and classification models using established ML methods
• Deploy pre‑trained language models for NLP tasks (text classification, NER, summarization, Q&A)
• Design and deploy document segmentation and embedding for retrieval‑augmented generation
• Conduct advanced quantitative research using ML/NLP on large datasets
• Configure AI workflows and pipelines with prompt engineering and text operations
• Create highly visual reports and user interfaces to surface insights to non‑technical audiences
• Stay updated on LLMs, NLP, and ML advances and apply productionized techniques
• Document development processes and promote reproducible workflows
