Job summary

Benchling is building an AI-driven platform for biotech R&D. We seek a Senior Software Engineer to own Lab Notebook and Enterprise Lifecycle systems, delivering scalable backend, APIs, and frontend components.

You will lead multi-quarter initiatives, drive architectural vision, and mentor engineers across the Applications division. You will collaborate with product, design, and regulatory stakeholders to translate customer needs into robust technical solutions, exploring AI/LLMs to enhance data

Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Experience as a technical lead on significant projects involving multiple engineers across multiple quarters.
• Strong experience building backend systems and APIs for cloud-based web applications; full-stack capability.
• Proven ability to design scalable, robust architectures for horizontal systems.
• Track record of scoping and driving initiative-level work across multiple teams.
• Excellent written and verbal communication; able to influence through technical designs.
• Interest in life sciences; biotech knowledge appreciated; experience with audit/compliance software is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the senior technical authority for the Lab Notebook and Enterprise Lifecycle teams, driving design and development of the Notebook, structured data-input, and enterprise lifecycle systems.
• Architect and implement scalable backend, APIs, and frontend UI across audit, review/approval, exports, backups, and lifecycle management.
• Lead large, multi-quarter initiatives with concrete technical plans and milestones for scale and reliability.
• Shape engineering direction and balance technical debt with long-term options across the Applications division.
• Provide technical leadership through code reviews, architecture, and mentoring engineers.
• Partner with product, design, and stakeholders to translate customer/regulatory needs into solutions.
• Explore and evaluate opportunities to leverage AI/LLMs to improve data capture and compliance workflows.
• Collaborate with other teams to integrate horizontal systems and enable product development.
• Own end-to-end delivery of features from planning to deployment and maintenance.
