Job summary

American Cruise Lines seeks experienced Mates for our U.S. flag fleet, navigating inland and coastal waterways across the East Coast, Alaska, and the Great Lakes. Mates are senior shipboard officers reporting to the Captain and ensuring safe vessel operations with professional leadership.

Qualifications

  • Coast Guard Mate license required (100 GRT, Near Coastal; 1600 GRT preferred)
  • TWIC required for work onboard
  • 2+ years of mate experience on coastal/river waterways; 5+ years with Z-drive preferred
  • Basic marine engineering knowledge (diesel, hydraulics, ballast/load management)
  • Excellent communication and team-building skills
  • Pre-employment drug test and ongoing random testing
  • Great Lakes route familiarity and recency in St. Lawrence Seaway, Welland Canal, and Great Lakes ports
  • Ability to perform essential functions in a dynamic onboard environment

Responsibilities

  • Ensure safety and security of passengers, crew, and vessel.
  • Operate the vessel in compliance with company and regulatory standards.
  • Conduct daily inspections of all vessel spaces.
  • Supervise, lead, and develop deck officers.
  • Execute vessel cleaning, sanitation, maintenance, and logistics.
  • Oversee crew orientation, training, watch standing, and drills.
  • Collaborate with Hotel Officers and Service Crew to ensure five-star guest service.
  • Maintain administrative documentation of cleaning, sanitation, maintenance, and logistics.
  • Lead a safe, clean, and comfortable onboard environment for passengers and crew.

USCG Mate License (Near Coastal)

GRT 1600 preferred
Coastal and River Experience
