Job summary

American Cruise Lines seeks experienced Mates for our U.S. flag fleet with routes on inland/coastal waterways. Mates are senior officers reporting to the Captain, ensuring safe operations, standards compliance, and professional leadership for guests and crew.

Our Mates supervise deck teams, develop piloting skills on coastal/river routes, and make timely, prudent decisions to reduce risk. Typical schedule is 6 weeks on / 3 weeks off, full-time exempt.

Qualifications

• USCG Mate’s license with 100 GRT Near Coastal endorsement; 1,600 GRT preferred.
• Coast Guard licensing and TWIC are required for seamanship roles.
• Experience as a Mate on coastal/river waterways is essential.
• Strong communication and team-building abilities are necessary.
• Pre-employment drug testing and ongoing random testing are required.
• Familiarity with Great Lakes routes and U.S. port traffic is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Ensure safety and security of passengers, crew, and vessel.
• Operate the vessel in compliance with standards and regulations.
• Conduct daily inspections of vessel spaces.
• Supervise, lead, and develop deck officers.
• Execute cleaning, sanitation, maintenance, and logistics.
• Train crew, supervise watch standing, and run drills.
• Collaborate with Hotel Officers and Service Crew for guest service.
• Document cleaning, maintenance, and logistics activities.
• Provide a safe, secure, and comfortable onboard environment.
