Job summary

Character Biosciences seeks a Scientist or Senior Scientist in Translational Biology to lead preclinical MOA work behind two clinical-stage programs targeting retinal diseases. Based at our Brisbane, CA site, you will design in vitro and in vivo studies, deepen understanding of asset mechanisms, and evaluate next-generation forms and disease applications.

You will work hands-on with primary cells, iPSC-derived models, and CRO partners, reporting to the Associate Director, Biology.

Qualifications

• PhD in cell biology, biochemistry, immunology, pharmacology or related discipline with a minimum of 2 years postdoctoral or industry experience.
• Hands-on capability in mammalian cell culture and quantitative functional assays including immunoassays, flow cytometry, high content imaging and qPCR.
• Experience building and qualifying cell-based assays capable of discriminating between closely related variants.
• Rigorous quantitative analysis with meticulous experimental documentation.
• Experience designing and managing in vivo studies with CROs preferred.
• Experience evaluating AAV or other gene-therapy constructs for expression, activity or potency preferred.

Responsibilities

• Design, execute and interpret in vitro studies extending MOA in disease-relevant cell systems (primary and iPSC-derived RPE, microglia, retinal and endothelial models).
• Evaluate next-generation forms of mechanisms and delivery approaches for retained expression, activity and potency.
• Link clinical biomarker readouts to drug mechanism and interpret PK data.
• Assess new disease applications for existing mechanisms with relevant tissue models.
• Collaboratively design and manage in vivo pharmacology and PK/PD studies with CROs.
• Present data and recommendations at internal and external meetings.
