Job summary

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a related technical field.
• 5+ years of relevant software engineering experience.
• Strong experience in Python and C++ for scientific/engineering software.
• Experience implementing computational modeling methods and numerical algorithms.
• Demonstrated software architecture, interfaces, maintainability and performance.
• Experience with automated testing (PyTest/GoogleTest).
• Proficiency with Git, Linux, Bash, and SSH.
• Experience mentoring engineers and conducting design/code reviews.
• Track record of building software that others can operate and maintain, with clear documentation.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, test, and maintain scientific and engineering software in Python and C++, including computational modeling methods and numerical algorithms.
• Own software architecture for internally developed engineering tools, selecting data structures, interfaces, and algorithms.
• Profile and optimize performance with measurable improvements and documentation.
• Collaborate with nuclear and other engineers to define software projects based on their needs.
• Own CI/CD for internally developed software using GitHub Actions or comparable systems.
• Build reproducible build and packaging pipelines for Python packages, Conda environments, and C++ binaries and libraries.
• Own artifact publication and versioning to enable exact reproducibility.
• Diagnose and resolve compilation, dependency, environment, and runtime problems across the stack.
• Establish container build and runtime patterns for Docker and Apptainer and manage base images.
• Uphold internal QA requirements and automate compliance within the pipeline.
• Define artifacts, records, and gates for controlled software delivery and reproducibility.
• Support software quality audits with tooling-generated evidence.
• Develop HPC workflows (Slurm, Open OnDemand, MPI, GPU) and improve user experience.
• Build self-service engineering workflows and documented paths for common problems.
• Establish design, documentation, and maintainability standards and enforce through reviews.
• Review software across the group to avoid single points of failure.
• Mentor engineers and transfer knowledge to reduce dependencies.
• Evaluate build-versus-buy decisions and prefer standard libraries.
• Prefer minimal designs that meet actual requirements.
• Participate in the help queue and communicate resolutions clearly to engineers.
