The Opportunity
Our Industrial Automation client is an established engineering and automation solutions provider helping manufacturers improve productivity, efficiency, and operational performance through innovative automation, controls, and material handling solutions.
We are seeking an experienced Sales Engineer to drive new business development and help expand the company's customer base.
This is not an account management position. We are looking for a hunter who enjoys opening doors, developing relationships, uncovering operational challenges, and turning those conversations into new business.
The ideal candidate combines strong business development skills with the technical credibility to walk into a manufacturing facility, understand the customer's operation, identify opportunities for improvement, and collaborate with engineering teams to develop the right solution.
The primary growth focus is Food & Beverage Manufacturing, with additional opportunities across industrial manufacturing, warehouse automation, and material handling.
Responsibilities
- Develop net-new business across Food & Beverage Manufacturing, industrial automation, and material handling markets
- Prospect into manufacturers and identify key decision-makers across Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, Supply Chain, and executive leadership
- Build relationships with Plant Managers, Engineering Leaders, Operations Leaders, Maintenance Leaders, and other stakeholders
- Conduct customer site visits to understand manufacturing processes, operational challenges, equipment, and automation requirements
- Identify opportunities for automation projects, engineering services, system improvements, and ongoing service work
- Translate customer requirements into technically viable solutions in partnership with engineering
- Develop scopes of work, technical proposals, project specifications, pricing, and presentations
- Present solutions and clearly communicate their operational benefits, ROI, and overall business value
- Manage opportunities throughout the full sales lifecycle—from initial prospecting through proposal, negotiation, and close
- Build and maintain a healthy pipeline of new customers and qualified opportunities
- Negotiate pricing and commercial terms while maintaining appropriate project profitability
- Develop long-term customer relationships that generate repeat project and service revenue
- Represent the company at customer meetings, industry events, trade shows, and conferences
- Maintain accurate pipeline, activity, and forecasting information within the CRM
- Stay current on developments in industrial automation, manufacturing technology, robotics, controls, and material handling
Qualifications
- Proven success in technical sales, industrial automation, systems integration, engineering services, or material handling
- Demonstrated ability to hunt and generate net-new business, rather than primarily manage inherited accounts
- Experience selling solutions into manufacturing environments
- Food & Beverage manufacturing experience and industry relationships strongly preferred
- Strong understanding of industrial automation and complex engineered solutions
- Ability to understand customer operations and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Experience developing and presenting technical proposals and scopes of work
- Strong prospecting, relationship-building, negotiation, and closing skills
- Ability to operate independently and take ownership of a territory and sales pipeline
- CRM and sales forecasting experience
- CAD experience preferred
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline preferred
- Willingness to travel to customer facilities and industry events as required
What Success Looks Like
This role is designed for someone who creates opportunities rather than waits for them.
Success will include:
- Consistently developing new customer relationships
- Building a strong pipeline of qualified automation and engineering opportunities
- Developing recurring service and project revenue from newly acquired customers
- Establishing the company as a trusted automation and engineering partner within the territory
