Job summary

Qualifications

• 8–10 years of relevant EHS or safety experience, including 3–5 years of management experience.
• Hands-on EHS experience in a 24/7 manufacturing environment; paper, pulp, wood products, MDF, chemical, or similar continuous‑process operation preferred.
• Working knowledge of OSHA requirements and experience owning plant environmental responsibilities (air, wastewater, permits, inspections, corrective actions).

Responsibilities

• Own site safety, environmental compliance, industrial hygiene, fire protection, and emergency‑preparedness programs.
• Develop and improve site-specific safety programs with input from frontline employees and plant leaders.
• Maintain environmental requirements involving air quality, ponds, wastewater, permits, inspections, documentation, and corrective actions.
• Lead incident investigations, root‑cause analysis, audits, training, regulatory reporting, and corrective‑action follow‑through.
• Build organized systems for tracking actions, metrics, training, inspections, and compliance requirements.
• Coach leaders and employees on safe work practices and establish accountability for EHS actions.

HTI is seeking an experienced Senior Safety Manager for a direct-hire opportunity with a leading global manufacturer in Mount Gilead, North Carolina. This site leadership role will own environmental, health, and safety programs for a 24/7 continuous-process plant that produces wood-based material used in flooring manufacturing. The salary range is $110,000-$130,000, depending on experience, with 10%-15% annual bonus potential.

What You Need:

• Bachelor's degree in safety, environmental health, occupational health, engineering, or a related field
• 8-10 years of relevant EHS or safety experience, including 3-5 years of management experience
• Hands‑on EHS experience in a 24/7 manufacturing environment; paper, pulp, wood products, MDF, chemical, or another continuous‑process operation is strongly preferred
• Working knowledge of OSHA requirements and experience owning plant environmental responsibilities such as air, wastewater, permits, inspections, and corrective actions
• Demonstrated success developing practical safety programs, investigating incidents, organizing compliance systems, and holding leaders accountable for corrective actions
• Fire‑protection or detection‑system experience is valuable; CSP, CIH, or a comparable safety certification is preferred
• Strong communication, organization, judgment, and ability to influence both front‑line employees and plant leadership
• Ability to support on‑call needs in a 24/7 operation and work across office and active production environments

What Your Role Will Look Like:

The Senior Safety Manager will lead the full site EHS function and serve as a visible partner to operations, maintenance, engineering, and plant leadership. The role is primarily focused on program ownership, compliance, tracking, and accountability, while maintaining a regular presence on the plant floor. This position reports to the Site Manager and is expected to lead one direct report.

• Own site safety, environmental compliance, industrial hygiene, fire protection, and emergency‑preparedness programs
• Develop and improve site‑specific safety programs with input from front‑line employees and plant leaders
• Maintain environmental requirements involving air quality, ponds, wastewater, permits, inspections, documentation, and corrective actions
• Lead incident investigations, root‑cause analysis, audits, training, regulatory reporting, and corrective‑action follow‑through
• Build organized systems for tracking actions, metrics, training, inspections, and compliance requirements
• Coach leaders and employees on safe work practices and establish clear accountability for completing EHS actions
• Manage and develop the direct report and serve as the senior EHS resource for the plant
• Support urgent EHS needs outside normal business hours as required by the 24/7 operation
