Job summary

Chewy is seeking a Safety Engineer, EHS – Engineering and Design to lead equipment safety design across our fulfillment network. You will review complex material-handling systems, assess risks, and ensure compliance with OSHA, NFPA, and ISO/ANSI standards from design through commissioning.

You will collaborate with Launch, Design, Construction, Engineering, Technology, and M&R teams; travel up to 50% is required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Safety Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
• 8+ years of experience in safety engineering or a related engineering role, preferably in warehousing, fulfillment, distribution, or manufacturing environments.
• Demonstrated ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, CAD files, design packages, and technical specifications.
• Knowledge of OSHA (29 CFR 1910/1926), NFPA, ANSI (including ISO 12100 and ANSI B11 series), NEC, and equipment certification requirements (UL, CE, NRTL).
• Experience participating in Management of Change (MOC) processes as a technical reviewer or SME.
• Experience conducting risk assessments and safety design reviews, applying hierarchy of controls.
• Proficiency with CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar).
• Strong written and verbal communication across technical and non-technical audiences.

Responsibilities

• Serve as embedded safety engineering SME for new buildings, capital equipment deployments, processes, pilots, and modifications across Chewy Fulfillment Network.
• Coordinate with cross-functional teams from concept through commissioning.
• Review equipment modifications, process changes, and facility alterations to identify hazards and propose controls.
• Review drawings, CAD files, and vendor submissions to identify hazards in material-handling systems.
• Conduct safety design reviews and risk assessments using ISO 12100, ANSI B11, and hierarchy of controls; maintain hazard logs.
• Define and track equipment certification requirements with vendors and NRTL labs.
