Job summary

Chewy is seeking a Safety Engineer, EHS – Engineering and Design to serve as the expert for equipment safety design across the Chewy Fulfillment Network.

This role partners with Launch, Design, Construction, Engineering, Technology, Maintenance & Reliability, and EHS teams to establish, interpret, and integrate equipment safety requirements into new buildings, capital projects, process changes, pilots, and equipment deployments.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Safety Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field.
• 8+ years of experience in safety engineering or a related engineering role, preferably in warehousing, fulfillment, distribution, or manufacturing.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, CAD files, design packages, and technical specifications for complex mechanical and material handling systems.
• Working knowledge of MHE systems, conveyor systems, racking, and general warehousing infrastructure.
• Knowledge of OSHA, NFPA, ANSI, NEC, and certification requirements (UL, CE, NRTL).
• Experience participating in Management of Change (MOC) processes; evaluate engineering changes for safety impact.
• Experience in risk assessments and applying hierarchy of controls.

Responsibilities

• Act as embedded safety engineering SME for new buildings and equipment deployments across Chewy Fulfillment Network.
• Coordinate with Launch, Design, Construction, Engineering, Technology, M&R, Operations, and EHS teams from concept to commissioning.
• Review equipment modifications and process changes to identify design-related hazards.
• Review drawings, CAD files, and vendor submittals for safety hazards and controls.
• Conduct safety design reviews and risk assessments using ISO 12100, ANSI B11, hierarchy of controls; maintain hazard logs.
• Define and track equipment certification requirements with vendors and NRTL laboratories.
• Establish FAT and SAT acceptance criteria and participate in testing to verify safeguarding systems.
• Develop and maintain equipment safety policies, standards, and training materials.
• Provide technical support for safety assessments and incident investigations.
