Job summary

Mortenson is seeking a Senior Safety Engineer in Cedar Rapids, IA to implement their Zero Injury Safety program across multiple project sites. You will ensure a safe work environment for all team members, subcontractors, and visitors.

The ideal candidate will have significant construction safety experience, a relevant degree or certifications, and be detail-oriented. The role requires a valid driver's license and may involve travel up to 100%.

Job description

Senior Safety Engineer

Mortenson is currently seeking a Senior Safety Engineer that will be responsible for implementing Mortenson’s Zero Injury Safety program across multiple project sites and ensuring a safe work environment for team members, subcontractors, and visitors to the construction work site.

Accepted Locations: Cedar Rapids, IA; Omaha, NE; Lincoln, NE

Responsibilities

• Implement and administer safety programs at worksites, including site‑specific safety activities and training programs
• Document and track safety violations, conduct safety audits, and analyze loss control data
• Lead OSHA reporting, monitor subcontractor activities, and review safety submittals
• Record, monitor, and analyze safety, injury, and hazard statistics
• Provide safety‑related information, evaluate industrial hygiene concerns, and maintain knowledge of safety standards
• Serve as a resource for safety issues, attend safety meetings, and assist with major incident analysis
• Work with client safety personnel, union representatives, and insurance risk engineers
• Ensure maintenance and inspection of safety equipment and build relationships with diverse backgrounds and organizational levels

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in safety, occupational health, or equivalent
• OR
• High school diploma with CHST Certification, OSHA 500, and a minimum of 10 years construction experience leading crews and planning work, to include at least six years as a dedicated construction safety professional responsible for managing project safety programs, conducting / reviewing hazard analyses and developing controls, conducting safety training, and planning work activities or equivalent experience in a relevant field
• Minimum of four years of construction safety experience
• Current valid driver’s license
• Detail‑oriented with the ability to organize and manage multiple project tasks
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant safety software programs
• Positive and professional attitude with strong customer service skills
• Ability to interpret and communicate Mortenson policies effectively
• Willingness to travel up to 100%

Salary and Benefits

• Senior Safety Engineer 1: Base pay range $89,500–$120,800
• Senior Safety Engineer 2: Base pay range $95,700–$129,200
• Actual range is higher for Denver, CO and Chicago, IL (5%), Seattle, WA and Portland, OR (10%), Washington, D.C. (12.5%)
• Eligible for Mortenson’s incentive plan
