Summary
Mortenson is currently seeking a Safety Engineer that will implement Mortenson’s Zero Injury Safety program at a project site and ensure a safe work environment for team members, subcontractors, and visitors to the construction work site. This position offers opportunities at both Levels 1 and 2, allowing candidates to apply based on their experience and qualifications. Compensation for this role is determined by experience and location. Accepted locations: Lincoln, NE; Omaha, NE; Cedar Rapids, IA.
Responsibilities
- Implement and administer the safety program at each worksite, assist in developing site‑specific safety activities, and conduct safety orientation/training.
- Document and track safety violations, conduct safety audits, analyze safety data, assist with major incident analysis, and manage OSHA reporting.
- Review safety submittals, monitor trade partner work plans, assist with onsite injury management, organize safety celebrations, and participate in project planning and hazard analysis.
- Provide safety‑related information, evaluate industrial hygiene concerns, maintain knowledge of safety standards/regulations, and serve as a safety resource; attend and chair safety meetings.
- Collaborate with client safety personnel, union representatives, insurance risk engineers; accompany safety/health/OSHA personnel on tours; ensure maintenance of safety equipment, manage PPE and safety budget.
- Build effective relationships with diverse backgrounds and organizational levels.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or associate degree in occupational safety, health, or related field preferred.
- OR high school diploma with CHST or STS certification, OSHA 30‑hour training, and a minimum of five years of construction experience.
- Previous related internship experience is a plus.
- Current driver’s license.
- Detail‑oriented, able to organize and manage multiple project tasks.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and safety‑related software programs.
- Positive, professional attitude and strong customer service skills.
- Ability to interpret and communicate company policies.
- Strong teamwork, initiative, communication, problem‑solving, and leadership skills.
- Effective public speaking and presentation skills.
- Effective communication and active listening skills, openness to diverse input and feedback, and ability to travel up to 100%.
Safety Engineer I
- Minimum qualifications: see above.
- Base pay range: $78,800 – $98,500.
Safety Engineer II
- Minimum qualifications: one year of related experience.
- Base pay range: $81,800 – $110,400.
Base pay is positioned within the range based on factors such as knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity. This position is eligible for Mortenson’s incentive plan.
