Job summary

R Systems is seeking a backend Rust engineer to design, build and operate highly scalable services for cloud-grade APls. You’ll own async Rust components, GraphQL/gRPC surfaces, and a database-first workflow in a modern distributed system.

You’ll work across Postgres schemas, migrations and authentication with role-based access control, while contributing to shared crates and cutting-edge streaming/media pipelines when needed. Remote-friendly with a contract-to-hire path and a broad tech stack.

Qualifications

• Strong production Rust ownership, borrowing and lifetimes, traits, error handling, and a type system used well.
• Solid async Rust (Tokio or equivalent) tasks, channels, streams, cancellation, and concurrency reasoning.
• Experience designing and operating backend services and their APIs (HTTP / GraphQL / gRPC).
• Production experience with relational databases and SQL (PostgreSQL preferred), including schema design and migrations with raw SQL.
• Understanding OAuth2/JWT and RBAC or relationship-based access control.
• Comfort with cloud-native workflows (Docker, CI/CD, cloud exposure) and collaborating in large codebases.

Responsibilities

• Design, build and ship Rust services end-to-end from Postgres to GraphQL and gRPC APIs.
• Own features in our cloud GraphQL API: async-graphql schemas and resolvers, sqlx migrations, RBAC, search, and messaging.
• Build and evolve async, concurrent systems with Tokio, workers, and streaming APIs under load.
• Work across gRPC / Protobuf boundaries (Tonic/Prost) and maintain backwards compatibility.
• Contribute to shared crates, keeping changes narrow and well-tested.
• Extend Strada's architecture with iroh/QUIC, WebRTC signaling, NAT traversal for peer-to-peer media.
• Optionally dive into GStreamer pipelines or cloud/data plane work as needed.
• Instrument all systems (OpenTelemetry, Datadog, Prometheus) and participate in CI/CD on AWS EKS.
