EPAM Systems, Inc. seeks a Lead Backend/Distributed Systems Engineer to design scalable and highly available services that integrate with distributed storage systems. You will build high-performance Rust components and drive system design for consistency, sharding, replication and fault tolerance.

Expect on-call duties and collaboration across global teams. The role requires strong async/concurrency expertise, experience with gRPC/Thrift interfaces, and cloud-native architecture with service

Qualifications

• 5+ years backend software engineering experience with Rust.
• Proven distributed storage system design or operation experience.
• Strong leadership to guide decisions and mentor engineers.

Responsibilities

• Design scalable, high-availability backend services that interact with distributed storage systems.
• Build high-performance Rust components and core service functionality.
• Lead system design for distributed storage features including consistency, sharding, replication, and fault tolerance.
• Implement RPC-based service interfaces using gRPC or Apache Thrift.
• Develop concurrent and asynchronous execution models for reliability and throughput.
• Troubleshoot production issues, debug complex failures, and drive root-cause resolution.
• Provide on-call support and improve runbooks and diagnostics.
• Coordinate with global teams and support occasional overlap meetings.
