Job summary

Brex in New York City is seeking a Risk Counsel to own the legal response to disputes, incidents, collections, and regulatory inquiries. You will coordinate with Compliance, Risk, Operations, and product teams to drive timely resolutions in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.

Ideal candidates have a JD and 6+ years of experience in litigation, creditors' rights, bankruptcy, or regulatory investigations, with strong drafting and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Qualifications

• JD and active bar license in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
• 6+ years of legal experience, incl. 3+ years in litigation, creditors' rights/collections, bankruptcy, regulatory investigations, or incident response.
• Experience owning pre-litigation disputes end to end.
• Knowledge of fintech regulatory landscape (money transmission, UDAAP, Reg E and Reg Z, BSA/AML, bank partnerships).
• Ability to manage a high-volume, high-stakes docket with sound judgment.
• Strong drafting for customer-facing and regulator-facing communications.

Responsibilities

• Manage pre-litigation matters end to end, including demand letters and disputes with customers/vendors.
• Lead legal resolution of account and funds ownership disputes.
• Oversee collections-related legal matters and outside counsel.
• Manage bankruptcy matters involving Brex customers and counterparties.
• Serve as legal lead on incidents; coordinate cross-functional response.
• Drive remediation programs arising from incidents.
• Own legal review for customer outreach connected to incidents and remediations.
• Prepare responses to regulatory inquiries with Compliance and partners.
• Supervise responses to subpoenas and third-party legal process.
• Build and improve playbooks, escalation frameworks, and reporting.
• Advise product/operations/support to reduce dispute risk upstream.
