Position Summary

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Senior Research Scientist.

We are seeking candidates for a full-time position to play a key role in supporting a major health policy initiative in New York State (NYS). As part of this initiative, the NYU Health Evaluation and Analytics Lab (HEAL) will provide analytical support to the Health Equity Regional Organization or HERO, which will be a central hub for consensus-building, planning and coordination around the implementation and evaluation of the New York State Health Equity Reform (NYHER) 1115 Medicaid Waiver Amendment. This waiver will invest up to $7 billion into the NYS Medicaid delivery system over the next three years, allowing the state to pay for services that address health-related services.

Based out of the Department of Population Health at NYU School of Medicine, HEAL seeks a Senior Research Scientist to oversee all dimensions of the HERO portfolio and supervise the team of analysts. The candidate will lead research and foster analytic collaborations with multiple stakeholders throughout the HERO and NYHER, overseeing each collaborative project. S/he will be responsible for independently developing regional needs assessments, creating a data pipeline to integrate claims and social needs data, conducting ongoing monitoring to track healthcare changes, leading evaluations specific to different populations and topics, and overseeing a team of data analysts.

The ideal candidate for this position will have expertise in health policy, public health surveillance, data science and/or social epidemiology, as well as experience managing teams and collaborations.

Job Responsibilities

  • Help develop and implement strategy for the HERO portfolio, including making recommendations and strategic decisions
  • Oversee data acquisition, matching across datasets, and related analytics
  • Develop regional needs assessments with input from social care networks
  • Conduct ongoing monitoring by region to track healthcare changes
  • Manage and supervise a team of data analysts, project coordinators, and other full-time staff
  • Develop and maintain a system to ensure timely achievement of all HERO project deliverables
  • Create and implement a research agenda for the HERO team
  • Foster collaborations with network of researchers interested in the waiver
  • With other senior staff members, prioritize requests from stakeholders for technical assistance and related support
  • Communicate effectively with other project staff and stakeholders
  • Contribute to press and publicity related to the HERO, including participating in media appearances and supervising and contributing to the production of media data analyses and press releases
  • Oversee modernization of and updates to the Medicaid data and other workflows
