Job summary

STC seeks a Senior Remote Sensing Data Scientist in College Park, MD to lead validation and operationalization of satellite atmospheric retrievals. You will leverage GNSS-RO data, assess physical and AI inversion methods, and drive the evaluation schedule with MTG-IRS as a proxy.

Responsibilities include developing baseline code, ATBDs, and evaluation reports, delivering an OC S-compliant package in 1–2 years, and coordinating data collection and validation with NESDIS STAR datasets.

Qualifications

• PhD or MS in Atmospheric Science, Remote Sensing, or related field with strong GNSS RO data processing focus.
• Proficiency in Python (NumPy/SciPy/xarray) or Fortran/C++ for processing large satellite datasets.
• Experience evaluating physical baseline retrievals and AI/ML approaches.
• Experience with Level-2 retrieval datasets and QC definitions.
• Ability to operate within a governance framework and develop cloud-based science applications.

Responsibilities

• Validate and operationalize next-generation satellite atmospheric retrievals using GNSS-RO as reference.
• Assess physical and AI/ML inversion algorithms with multi-year evaluation schedules.
• Execute official retrieval evaluation cycles (NUCAPS, MIIDAPS-AI) including Round 1 retrievals.
• Prepare baseline code, ATBDs, and evaluation reports for OC S-compliant deployment in 1–2 years.
• Collect NESDIS STAR retrieval data and RO data; assess quality and guide algorithm selection.
• Compute algorithm bias, RMSE, and vertical structure against independent references.
• Analyze latency, throughput, and robustness across clouds, land/ocean, inversions, and aerosols.
