Qualifications

• PhD in a quantitative field completed by hire date (MS with relevant experience considered).
• Knowledge of remote sensing, satellite and oceanographic data, systems, and analyses.
• Proficiency in C++, Fortran, and Python programming languages.
• Experience with multi-threaded tools such as OpenMP, MPI, and CUDA.
• Experience applying ML using PyTorch or TensorFlow; familiarity with netCDF4/HDF5/HDF4/Zarr.
• Linux OS and SSH familiarity; Airflow is a plus.
• Proven publications or deliverables; ability to conduct independent research in a team setting.

Responsibilities

Global Science & Technology, Inc (GST), a GTSC company, a growing scientific and high technology company, is seeking a Scientific Programmer for Remote Sensing Applications to support NOAA/NESDIS/STAR.

This position is located in College Park, MD, but may be considered for teleworking. A hybrid model of onsite and telework each week may also be considered.

Position Summary:

The successful candidate will work with a group of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) scientists and software developers at the Satellite Oceanography and Climatology Division (SOCD) under the NOAA Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR). The position is long term, contingent upon performance.

Primary Duties:

• The individual in this position will be responsible for the development and maintenance of science code for production of SST datasets from multiple low earth orbit and geostationary sensors (e.g., VIIRS, AHI, ABI, AVHRR, MODIS, METimage, FCI).

• Development and implementation of improved cloud masking, SST retrieval, and error characterization algorithms.
• This is a scientific position that requires a strong understanding of physical science, mathematics and like all modern science endeavors an understanding of how to perform scientific computing.

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

• PhD in a quantitative field of research (Physics, Math, Statistic, Remote Sensing, Oceanography, Meteorology) completed by date of hire. An MS with relevant experience working in a similar field will be considered.

• Knowledge of remote sensing, satellite & oceanographic data, systems, and analyses

• Proficiency with C++, Fortran, and Python programming languages

• Experience with multi-threaded programming tools such as openMP, MPI, and Cuda
• Experience with application of machine learning algorithm using PyTorch or TensorFlow
• Experience with data formats frequently used by the remote sensing community such as netCDF4, HDF5, HDF4, and Zarr.

• Familiarity with Linux operating systems and common tools such as SSH
• Familiarity with the Apache Airflow workflow management platform is a plus
• Proven list of deliverables (peer-reviewed publications, derived products, software packages, etc.)
• Willingness and ability to conduct independent research (problem definition, technical solution, coding, publication) while being a team player.
• Strong scientific analytical skills with detail-oriented working style

Salary at GST is determined by various factors, including but not limited to location, the individual's combination of education, knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience, as well as contract-specific affordability and organizational requirements. The projected compensation range for this position is $130,000 to $170,000 (annualized USD). The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range or this position and is just one component of the GST total compensation package for employees.
